With the start of the new year comes a fresh set of rankings for the google toolbar pagerank. While this was stated to have started on or about the 11th of January according to Matt Cutts. As always, there is quite a bit of buzz going on: you can’t hardly visit a webmaster forum without a long discussion about the pagerank update. Check out webmaster world (you must be a registered user to view - if you’re not registered, you should!), digital point forums and wembaster-talk only to name a few.
The good thing, for me, anyway is that I appear to have a current pagerank 0 site that might shoot up to a pagerank 4 according to the live pagerank checker - at least it’s showing a PR 4 for many of the datacenters listed on that page.
Anyone else expecting a big jump in pagerank for their website during this update?

For all the stringent, on page seo hardliners our there that believe on page optimization is the absolute key to success for a website regarding search engine rankings - I have a couple of things to share:
The #1 result in Google for “webhosting” (39 million+ results) has no meta tags in place. (www.webhosting.com)
The #5 result in Google for “dog training” (13 million+ results) has no meta tags in place.
The #3 result in Yahoo for “affiliate program” (112 million+ results) has no meta tags in place.
The #2 result in Yahoo for “car insurance” (152 million+ results) has no meta tags in place.
These are just a few examples. This post is really intended to benefit the unfortunate people who are brainwashed and spoon fed the fallacy that on page optimization alone will get you top search engine rankings for highly competitive keywords.
Of course I personally belive that on page seo methods are important, and I employ a great number of them myself on various websites of mine. I just don’t think it’s fair to the uninformed (those that pay for seo services) that they are fed the lies that on page optimization is the absolute key.
What’s your take on this?

On Page SEO

To begin - in case you do not know what anchor text is, it is the words used to describe a link when placed in html code as such:
<a href=http://www.example.com>This is the anchor text</a>
It’s a fairly well known fact within the SEO community that descriptive, keyword focused anchor text can greatly improve your search engine rankings for these keywords: the question is, are you utilizing this to its full potential?
It seems that while on page optimization (optimization that takes place on your own website) methods tend to change with time: the value and benefit of building links with keyword focused anchor text has stood the test of time. So far, anyway. This refers both to links from 3rd party websites and internal links on your own website.
To further see the effect keyword targeted anchor text, we’ll quote some research published on the v7n.com blog about inbound links and anchor text:
Monster.com currently sits in the #1 spot for the search term Jobs. The word “jobs†does not even appear on that page in text form; the only occurrence is once in the form of ALT text.
Search Google for Computers. At this time, six of the top ten pages do not contain the word Computers in the page copy. They are there due solely to anchor text of inbound links.
Search Google for Profit. At this time, 7 of the top ten pages do not contain the word Profit in the page copy. They are there due solely to anchor text of inbound links.
Search Google for Promote. At this time, 5 of the top ten pages do not contain the word Promote in the page copy. They are there due solely to anchor text of inbound links.
Search Google for Advertise. At this time, 6 of the top ten pages do not contain the word Advertise in the page copy. They are there due solely to anchor text of inbound links.
Search Google for Click. At this time, 9 of the top ten pages do not contain the word Click in the page copy. They are there due solely to anchor text of inbound links.
Search Google for webhosting. At this time, four of the top ten pages do not contain the word webhosting in the page copy. They are there due solely to anchor text of inbound links.
Search Google for hits. At this time, the top three pages do not contain the word hits in the page copy. They are there due solely to anchor text of inbound links.
Do a search for exit. All of the sites on the first page are there due solely to anchor text of inbound links.
Same thing applies when you do a search for leave, for which Yahoo! is listed in the #1 spot. Yahoo is also #1 for the search term exit, due solely to the anchor text of hundreds of mature content sites.
Seeing this, one can clearly see the importance of descriptive keyword focused anchor text. Not only can this off page seo method help you to build prominence for your website with your selected keywords in conjunction with your on page optimization efforts, descriptive anchor text can actually cause you to rank well for keywords that do not even show up within your website text itself.
Not a bad deal if you ask me.
